The Power of Breathwork

Simple Practices to Promote Wellbeing

Breathwork therapy is a psychotherapeutic, meditative activity that involves the conscious alteration of natural breathing patterns. This active meditation helps quiet the mind enough to access and release unprocessed energy (emotions) in the body. Though each person will open as much as they are ready to, many people express an emotional release in breathwork therapy that leads to improved mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.

Many of us have intellectually processed and re-processed our problems. We understand them, we might even know why we behave the way we do, but we don’t understand why that doesn’t contribute to sustainable change. The body, through our nervous system, is constantly signaling to the brain whether or not it feels safe. We have to feel relaxed and at ease in our bodies enough to make different choices. Breathwork therapy helps us address the unresolved energy lodged in the body keeping us stuck and feeling unsafe. It is a process of deep rhythmic breathing and it moves us out of the fight-flight-freeze-fawn response within our nervous system.

When you’re exposed to trauma your nervous system automatically takes over in an effort to keep you safe. Depending on the threat, your sympathetic nervous system may respond by the fight or fleeing the situation. On the other hand, when that’s not possible, your parasympathetic nervous system will shut down your system and you may freeze or fawn — a people-pleasing response. This is where breathwork therapy can help by releasing and processing the unresolved emotions and core beliefs. This will help with the process of feeling empowered and reclaiming your sense of safety within your body.
